GST Tip of the Day: Display Your GSTIN on Your Signboard and Registration Certificate

The rule everyone skips
You registered for GST, downloaded your certificate, saved the PDF somewhere on your laptop — and got back to running the business. Fair enough. But there's a small compliance step that comes after registration that a surprising number of shops, offices and workshops never complete.
Under Rule 18 of the CGST Rules, every registered person must:
- Display the GST registration certificate in a prominent location at the principal place of business — and at every additional place of business.
- Display the GSTIN on the name board (signboard) at the entry of the principal place of business and every additional place.
It sounds trivial. It is trivial — which is exactly why it's worth fixing today, before an inspecting officer makes it your problem.
Why it matters
GST in India is built on transparency. The idea behind displaying your GSTIN is simple: anyone — a customer, a supplier, an officer — should be able to see that you are a registered taxpayer and verify your number. It also discourages people from collecting tax without actually being registered.
If an officer visits your premises and finds the certificate missing from the wall or the GSTIN absent from your board, this is treated as a contravention of the rules. There is no separate fixed fine for it, so it falls under the general penalty in Section 125, which can go up to ₹25,000. More practically, it signals sloppiness — and that's not the first impression you want to give during any verification or survey.
What "display" actually means
- The certificate: Print the GST registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) you downloaded from the portal, frame it or laminate it, and put it on a wall that's visible — reception, the shop counter, the office entrance. Keep one at each branch or godown you've added as an additional place of business.
- The GSTIN on the board: Your 15-digit GSTIN should appear clearly on the name board at the entrance. It doesn't need a fancy redesign — a clean, legible addition to your existing signage is enough.
For businesses operating from home or running purely online, keep the certificate displayed at the registered principal place of business you declared. If you've added a warehouse later, make sure it's been added on the portal and the certificate copy is up there too.
Quick self-check for today
- Is your registration certificate physically displayed at your main location?
- Have you added every godown, branch or extra shop as an additional place of business on the portal — and displayed a certificate copy there?
- Does your signboard show the GSTIN?
- Is the GSTIN on your certificate still current (no recent amendment to address or business name that you forgot to print)?
If you amended your registration recently — changed your trade name, added a director, shifted address — download the fresh certificate and replace the old printout. The displayed copy should match what's live on the portal.
The bigger picture
This is one of those compliances that costs nothing and takes five minutes, yet quietly protects you. Inspections and physical verifications do happen, especially for new registrations and for businesses flagged by the system. When an officer walks in and sees the certificate on the wall and the GSTIN on the board, you've already shown you take compliance seriously.
So today's tip is genuinely a today task: print the certificate, hang it up, and check your board. Done.
